Real Madrid Club de Fútbol is one of the most successful football clubs in the world, and is the “winningest” team in all sports – holding more international and national titles than any other. It was named by FIFA the “Best Club of the 20th Century”.
Real Madrid was founded in 1902 and has always been owned and operated by its members (socios). The Club was originally named “Sociedad Madrid Football Club”, but in 1920 it was officially blessed by King Alfonso XIII of Spain and granted the right to use the title “Real” (royal).
Real Madrid is based in Madrid and plays its home games at the world-famous Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. It competes in the Spanish league’s top division – the “Primera” Division of La Liga. It has never been relegated since the formation of the league.
They have been European Champions 9 times, and have won 30 La Liga titles, most recently on June 17th, 2007! Having finished level on points with their fierce rivals Barcelona, they were declared winners on a better head-to-head record.
Throughout its history, the club has acquired a lot of nicknames. Because of their legendary white uniforms, they are called “los merengues” (like the dessert) and “los Blancos”. In the 70’s, they signed several northern European players and the nickname “los Vikingos” became popular. Most recently, the club was nicknamed “los Galácticos” because of the superstar players that were being signed – like Luis Figo (from FC Barcelona), Zinedine Zidane (from Juventus), Ronaldo (from Internazionale) and David Beckham (from Manchester United).

For the club’s 100th Anniversary in 2002, a new anthem was created. The author of the melody and the lyrics is a famous Spanish composer, Jose Cano, and it was performed by the international superstar tenor from Madrid - Placido Domingo – along with 82 musicians. When you visit Bernabeu to see a Real Madrid game, you will hear this anthem as the team comes out onto the pitch.
